Rome Coppede district

Right behind the Villa Borghese Park, next to the elegant Parioli district, is the unique Coppede district. Designed by the eclectic master and architect, Gino Copede, who lived in Rome at the beginning of the 20th century. The architect built this district by order of the city government for social housing for workers and employees. At that time, the ideas of socialism were very popular, so such areas for the working class were erected in many European cities.

It took nearly 12 years, from 1915 to 1927, to build the Copede neighborhood, and eventually the area became trendy and popular with the city’s bourgeois and wealthy residents. And the architect acquired his own style of Copede in the form of genres of eclecticism and freedom that he transformed (as they call modern in Italy).

A set of houses and buildings

In fact, the Coppede neighborhood is not even so much a neighborhood as much as a collection of condos and buildings, characterized by a fantastic blend of Art Deco, Liberty, Gothic, Baroque and Middle Ages styles. Buildings vary in size and shape. Two of the most famous, with bright and lush decorations, are the spider house with a large spider on the facade inspired by Assyrian-Babylonian motifs and the asymmetrical fairy palace with arches and medieval-style decorations. The fabulous atmosphere in this unusual corner of Rome has inspired many creative personalities. For example, famed horror director Dario Argento chose Coppede as the location for his films Inferno and The Crystal-Feathered Bird.

The grand entrance to this magical neighborhood is adorned with a lush arch that connects the two-building complex with the towers of the Palazzo degli Ambasciatori. The building received its name because foreign diplomats lived here throughout the 20th century. The vault of the arch is decorated with a massive wrought iron lamp, and on the contrary, goldfish swim in the Fountain of the Frogs. As the architect himself said: “A fountain is water, which means life; it is nature that blends with the human soul in a harmonious and noisy game of splashes of flowing water “.

Several years ago, a unique penthouse was sold in this building, occupying the fourth and fifth floors of a building – a true architectural and design gem. The area of the apartment is 400 sq m. plus 220 sqm panoramic terraces. The apartment consists of three living rooms, a kitchen, four bathrooms and a sleeping area. The highest point of the apartment has no equal: it is the top of the tower.
